Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Brazil on Monday, the second leg of his three-nation tour, where he will participate in the G20 Summit. His arrival in Rio de Janeiro follows a successful visit to Nigeria, during which he held bilateral talks with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and engaged with the Indian community.
Announcing his arrival, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) shared on X, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi lands in the vibrant city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend the G20 Brazil Summit," accompanied by photos of his warm welcome at the airport. PM Modi also expressed his anticipation for the summit on his official X handle, stating, "Landed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to take part in the G20 Summit. I look forward to the summit deliberations and fruitful talks with various world leaders."
As part of the G20 Troika, which includes Brazil, India, and South Africa, PM Modi will participate in the 19th G20 Summit alongside other global leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden, on November 18-19.
Historic Third Leg of the Visit to Guyana
Following the summit, PM Modi will travel to Guyana from November 19 to 21 at the invitation of President Mohamed Irfaan Ali. This marks the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Guyana in over 50 years, underscoring the significance of the trip.
Legacy of India's G20 Presidency
In a departure statement, PM Modi emphasised the continuity of India's G20 vision, saying, "This year, Brazil has built upon India's legacy. I look forward to meaningful discussions in keeping with our vision of 'One Earth, One Family, One Future.' I will also use the opportunity to exchange views on furthering bilateral cooperation with several other leaders." India's G20 presidency last year achieved milestones such as the induction of the African Union as a permanent member and a leaders’ declaration amid global divides over the Ukraine conflict.
Nigeria Visit Highlights
During his visit to Nigeria, PM Modi was conferred with the prestigious Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), becoming only the second foreign dignitary to receive the honour after Queen Elizabeth II. This award marks the 17th international recognition of PM Modi by a foreign nation.
His trip to Nigeria was also a historic one, being the first by an Indian prime minister to the West African country in 17 years. The visit underscored India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and global partnerships.
